We explore independent students' unique challenges and experiences, from their socioeconomic backgrounds and academic preparedness to their application patterns and degree completion rates.

Key insights include:

  • Independent students had an average high school GPA of 3.24, compared to 3.65 for other applicants.
  • These students submitted fewer applications per applicant and were more likely to apply to in-state institutions.
