Deadline updates, 2023–2024: first-year application trends through November 1

By November 1, 2023, 836,679 first-year applicants submitted 3,353,516 applications to 834 returning Common App member institutions. This reflects a 41% increase in applicants and a 65% rise in application volume compared to the 2019–20 cycle.

Some background on the students who applied:

• First-generation applicants increased by 67%, about twice the rate of continuing-generation applicants.
• Fee waiver eligibility rose by 100%, more than four times the growth of students not reporting fee waiver eligibility.
• Applicants from below median income ZIP codes grew by 52%. Outpacing peers from higher-income areas, who grew by 34%.
• Highly selective institutions that admit fewer than 25 percent of applicants saw slower growth in applications compared to less-selective and moderately selective schools.
